I was a young professor in Athens, Georgia when I was named a WK Kellogg Fellow. This leadership experience opened opportunities to meet people who would go on to make critical impacts on communities around the US. It also introduced me to international study and travel. When I completed my fellowship, I wanted my whole family to know more about the world. I did this through a Fulbright Fellowship to Sendai, Japan. Here was introduced to a famous Japanese quilter who taught me to paint with fabric. My family also developed a deep friendship with the owner of a small neighborhood jazz Café, Mr. Brown’s Café. This quilt reminds me of the halcyon days my family spent in a tiny section of a northern town in Japan.
